WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY (2018) - Lesbian Interest Film (USA)

Emily and Susan

Wild Nights with Emily (2018), is a lesbian interest film, about the enduring love story between Emily Dickinson, the iconic American poet and her brother's wife Susan. The film focuses on the relationship between Emily and Susan from girlhood to Emily's death in 1886. We see love blossom between the couple from a few stolen kisses as girls to a mature relationship full of passion, physical intimacy and connection.

Set in the mid 19th century the film bucks the notion that Emily was completely reclusive instead we are shown an Emily who bakes gingerbread for local children, gardens and lives a full life of family, quiet reflection and intimacy.

Only 11 of her poems were ever published in her life time despite her prolificacy. We are shown a women who is faced with a string of male editors who not understanding her work and her genius act as gatekeepers to publication.

Ironically it is Mabel Todd, her brother's mistress, who with an eye for the main chance, spots Emily's brilliance and seeks to gain fame for herself by promoting Emily's poems posthumously. Luckily Sue's daughter who has a lot more insight into the true nature of her mother's relationship with Emily is able to set the historical record straight somewhat.

Molly Shannon shines as Emily in this movie as does Susan Ziegler as Sue. Wild Nights with Emily (#wildnightswithemily) is both entertaining and refreshing. Its comic treatment to lighten the drama is a delight in a biographical film. The movie deserves a much higher rating than the 6.0 currently awarded on IMDb.

HEAVENLY CREATURES (1994) Lesbian Interest Movie

Pauline and Juliet

Heavenly Creatures (1994), a lesbian interest film, is the true story of Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, two teenage girls growing up in New Zealand in the early 1950's. The movie based on Pauline's own diaries provides a window into the bond that Pauline and Juliet share - a love of fantasy and literature and each other. However the adults around them become concerned about the intensity of their relationship and decide to separate them. Juliet and Pauline seek their revenge by conspiring to kill Pauline's mother.

In real life both girls were considered too young for the death penalty and were incarcerated separately for five years in 1954. Juliet was released in 1959 and left New Zealand immediately to join her mother overseas eventually becoming a famous author of historical detective stories under the pseudonym of Anne Perry. Pauline remained in New Zealand a further seven years following her release in the same year. One of the conditions of their release was that they never meet again.

Heavenly Creatures is an outstanding movie that has become a lesbian classic. The acting by both Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey is convincing and the movie enthralling and well deserving of the 7.3 IMDb rating.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire Movie Quote
Héloïse: I feel something new.
Marianne: What?
Héloïse: Regret.
Marianne: Don't regret. Remember. I'll remember when you fell asleep in the kitchen.
Héloïse: I'll remember your dark look when I beat you at cards.
Marianne: I'll remember the first time you laughed.
Héloïse: You took your time being funny.
Marianne: That's true. I wasted time.
Héloïse: I wasted time too. I'll remember the first time I wanted to kiss you.
Marianne: When was that?
Héloïse: You didn't notice?
Marianne: At the feast around the bonfire.
Héloïse: I wanted to, yes. But that wasn't the first time.
Marianne: Tell me.
Héloïse: No, you tell me.
Marianne: When you asked if I had known love. I could tell the answer was yes. And that it was now.
