Freeheld is a lesbian interest film based on a true story about Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore, The Kids Are Alright), a lesbian police officer in Ocean County, New Jersey who fights to have her domestic partner, Stacie Andree (Ellen Page, My Days of Mercy). acknowledged following her diagnosis with terminal lung cancer in 2005. Laurel Hester who repeatedly appeals to the county's board of chosen freeholders to have her pension benefits passed on to her domestic partner eventually succeeds.
