In this lesbian film The Handmaiden set in Korea in the 1930's a new girl Sook-Hee is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress Lady Hideko who lives a secluded life in the country with her domineering uncle. Unbeknownst to Lady Hideko, Sook-Hee has been recruited by a swindler posing as a Japanese Count to defraud her and place her in a mental institution. However, the plan goes awry when Sook-Hee and Lady Hideko develop feelings for each other.
The Handmaiden is a rich and engaging film with vivid sets and costumes. Both actress give stunning performances and are compelling to watch. It is based on the novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters.
