Tru and Alice

Tru Love (2013) (IMDb 6.3) is a lesbian interest movie from Canada featuring the love story between Tru and Alice. The storyline concerns recently widowed Alice who makes a last minute visit to the city to spend time with her daughter Suzanne. Suzanne, a hard working lawyer who already has a difficult relationship with her mother enlists her friend Tru who is between jobs to babysit her mother while she works long hours on a case.

Alice: My daughter is very secretive.
Suzanne: My mother is very intrusive.

Tru and Alice have an immediate connection despite the obvious age gap, Tru is 37 and Alice is 60. Thrughout the movie they have a lot of frank conversations but all tinged with humor and a glint in their eyes. Alice asks early on "do you prefer younger or older women" not surprisingly Tru comes back with "both".

Alice: Can I ask you a direct question?
Tru: Fire away.
Alice: I don't want to be intrusive.
Tru: I don't mind.
Alice: Have you always known that you were ...
Tru: A lesbian?
Alice: Yes.
Tru: Well no. I tried dating guys when I was younger. Wasn't my thing.
Alice: Don't you miss ... don't you miss men? You know ... sex I mean.
Tru: That's a deeply penetrating question.
Tru: No. Sex with women is hot.
Alice: Is it?
Tru: My turn.
Tru: Why did you get married Alice?
Alice: Oh well. You know it was a different time and uh I needed to escape my circumstances.
Alice: I mean it was either that or join a nunnery. You couldn't be a lesbian.
Tru: You could if you joined a nunnery.
Alice: You enjoy life don't you?
Tru: I have my moments.
Alice: Heart break?
Tru: More than once.
Tru: I'm very good at starting relationships. It's uh the middle and end parts I tend to ___ up.
Tru: ... it seems I have poor boundaries and I'm not equipped for healthy relationships.
Tru: At least that's what my fabulously hot therapist tells me.
Tru: [making a toast] To lesbian love. A blood sport.
Alice: Have you slept with a lot of lesbians?
Tru: Well most of the women that I have slept with are in fact card carrying lesbians. But not all. Confused women like to sleep with me too.

As the days wear on the closeness that develops between Tru and Alice begins to bother Suzanne who once had a thing with Tru and is not sure where she stands with her or wants to stand with her. The jealousy culminates in Suzanne lying to try to separate Alice and Tru however she underestimates the degree of their connection.

Alice: Why didn't you come?
Tru: I did come. Suzanne told me you were sick.
Alice: I wasn't sick.
Tru: Did you get my note?
Alice: Why would she do that? I mean lie? To me? and to you?
Tru: Alice

Tru: I thought that we had worked it out but I guess she is still upset with me.
Alice: Upset? Upset about what?
Tru: I think it would be better if she told you.
Alice: Told me what?
Alice: You know I'm so damn tired of being kept in the dark. It's highly overrated.
Tru: It's complicated.
Suzanne: Yeah well. Why don't you just uncomplicate it?
Tru: Remember when I told you that confused women like to sleep with me too.
Tru: One time. One time when I stayed over at her place
Alice: We both had too much to drink and ...
Alice: You and Suzanne?
Tru: We woke up in bed together and ... that was awkward. She couldn't talk about it and
Tru: That was the last time I stayed with her.
Alice: How long ago?
Tru: June
Alice: So shortly after Richard died.
Tru: We bumped into each other a while ago. She said she missed me and wanted to reconnect. She seemed really happy about that.
Tru: We've had coffee and talked but not about that ... I thought we were OK but ...
Tru: I'm sorry.
Alice: I don't know what to say.
Tru: We can still be friends though can't we Alice?
Alice: Friends. Yes of course ... Friends that's what we are.
Alice: I'm sorry I doubted you. I thought you were tired of me.
Tru: I could never tire of you.
Alice: Really?
Tru: Really.

Eventually Suzanne is forced to accept the relationship between Alice and Tru and make her peace with Tru.

Suzanne: I like you Tru. I do.
Tru: But
Suzanne: But, um ...
Suzanne: I'm just not sure that I am gay. I don't know what I am.
Suzanne: I think that's why I freaked out on you. I was feeling um a bit threatened and uh confused I guess.
Tru: It's OK to be confused.
Suzanne: I think my mother might be a bit confused.
Suzanne: Thank you for making her a cake.
Tru: No problem.
Suzanne: Are you going to stay for her last dinner?
Tru: I'd love to.
Suzanne: Good.

Tru Love (2013) delivers a compelling story of love and connection between an older and younger woman which is very unusual in itself. The triangle between the three women as they work through past hurts also adds weight to the film. There are some excellent lines for the characters to work with particularly those interactions between Tru and Alice which helps to make them endearing along with their solid performances.

Tru Love (2013) is an enjoyable movie to watch but it disappoints by not providing a happy ending to this unconventional love affair. Tru is changed enough by the experience to commit to on-again-off-again girlfriend Claire who makes a few brief appearances throughout the movie. It is not a convincing end or a desirable one and it is hard to know why so much of the film was spent laying the foundations with Alice and dismantling them with Claire to then do a 360 degree turn with the ending.

Atomic Blonde (2017) (IMDb 6.7) is a lesbian interest movie featuring a woman loving woman storyline between Lorraine and Delphine. Charlize Theron plays Lorraine aka Elizabeth Lloyd, an MI6 spy who is sent to Berlin on a mission to investigate the murder of a fellow spy and to retrieve a coveted list hidden in a Swiss watch.

In Berlin Lorraine is challenged to determine who she can trust as danger seems to be around every turn. Although she doesn't act on the information she is aware that she is being followed by Delphine La Salle (Sofia Boutella), a French operative, who is collecting intelligence for the French government. She asks Percival, her contact, "what do you know about this woman who's  been following me since Tempelhof?" and receives from him an interesting reply "I'd say that you're an attractive woman and you should do the math."

Eventually Lorraine and Delphine meet in a bar and Delphine deters the Russian spy who is nosing around by saying that they haven't seen each other in a while and they really need to catch up. Delphine tells Lorraine that she is a part-time translator who really wants to be a poet or a rock star among other things. Delphine then shares that part of the reason she came to Berlin was because of a broken heart.

Lorraine remains skeptical of Delphine but is intrigued enough by her and the hope of gaining information to turn up to the club the next night at Delphine's invitation.

Out the back of the nightclub the couple start kissing passionately and then Lorraine discovers Delphine's gun and demands she explain herself.

Lorraine and Delphine then go on to make passionate love. The love scene is hot to say the least and is convincingly choreographed. In the deleted scenes we find a longer discussion between Lorraine and Delphine about love and it is a shame that it didn't make the final cut.

The Atomic Blonde film is largely told with a series of flashbacks interweaved between key scenes. At the debrief with MI6 Lorraine lies by telling them that Delphine gave her no information when in fact Delphine tells Lorraine that Percival is corrupt.

When Lorraine discovers that Percival has set them both up she goes to Delphine's apartment. Unfortunately Lorraine is too late and Delphine is lying dead strangled at the hands of Percival. We see Lorraine broken by the knowledge that she has cost Delphine her life while Nena sings a soulful rendition of Luftballons and the newscaster celebrates the fall of the Berlin Wall in the background.

One of the most powerful elements of Atomic Blonde movie is that it constantly keeps you guessing about where Lorraine's loyalties actually lie. Lorraine finds Percival, retrieves the watch containing "The List" and kills him saying to him that "you didn't have to kill her." At the same time she lets him know that she is going to frame him as a double agent when it is she herself who is actually working for the Americans.

The lesbian interest themes in the Atomic Blonde movie were a late edition to the storyline as they are not part of the graphic novel The Coldest City on which Atomic Blonde is based. The addition of Lorraine and Delphine as lovers does however elevate the movie from a run of the mill action story to one that is not only an enjoyable watch but has some excellent scenes of two women appreciating each other and enjoying each other.

AROUND THE BLOCK (2013) - Lesbian Interest Movie

Dino and Kate

The Australian lesbian interest movie Around the Block (2013) (IMDb 5.9) features a lesbian storyline between Dino and Kate. The movie is set in Sydney and stars Christina Ricci as Dino, an American English teacher who goes to work in the underprivileged prodominantly aboriginal neighbourhood of Redfern. Dino immediately sets about engaging the kids by encouraging the class to perform Hamlet to the local community.

but can we choose to be free?

By chance Dino meets an old friend who tells her that her ex-girfriend Kate (Andrea Demetriades) works near to the school and would like to see her. Dino begins to regularly drive past the deli where Kate works but can't quite bring herself to go in.

Dino is in a deadend relationship with Simon. She is unhappy with their normative lifestyle but hasn't been able to make the break. When the couple are out to lunch with Simon's boss she ends the relationship when Simon fails to stand up for her and allows racist comments to go by without challenge.

Still unable to muster the courage to talk to Kate, Dino goes to a gay bar. There she picks up Hannah (Ruby Rose) and has a one night stand with her. The love scene with Hannah while mostly kissing is well choreographed and occurs at around 56:45 in the movie.

The next day Dino goes to see Kate and invites her to the play. They talk for the first time in years. Dino tells Kate that she knows now that what they shared was real and that she still thinks about her a lot. Kate tells Dino that after five years she can't expect her to be ready to jump back into her arms.

Dino: Kinda. I'm teaching drama at Redfern High

Kate: I chose to stop feeling it.

At the play Kate arrives late and sneaks in the back but not without Dino noticing her. The students receive a standing ovation for their performances especially Liam who plays Hamlet. Afterwards as people are milling around talking Kate and Dino lock eyes and smile at each other and we know that their love story is about to reignite.

Around the Block is a modern day To Sir With Love and is an engaging drama that competently highlights racial tensions and inequality in the Sydney suburb of Redfern. As a lesbian interest movie it falls a little short. The encounter between Hannah and Dino is almost superfluous to the story especially because the development of the relationship between Dino and Kate is a little too sparse.

The understated ending for Dino and Kate disappoints and would have been made more powerful with the addition of a kiss or even a conversation between Dino and Kate to cement their rekindled love. Overall though Around the Block is worth the watch and has enough happening for the main characters to hold most viewers interest. The aboriginal theme also helps to raise the status of the film Around the Block to one of social commentary.

SAME BUT DIFFERENT (2019) - Lesbian Interest Movie from New Zealand

Same But Different: A True New Zealand Love Story (2019), (IMDb 7.3) is an independent film of lesbian interest set in Auckland New Zealand. The Same but Different film, a romantic comedy, is the brainchild of Nikki Si'ulepa and is based on her own real life love story with her wife Rachel Aneta Wills.

The plot of Same But Different follows Rachel, a single Mum of two and an actor who wants to get out of the city after a drunken one night stand has unsettled her. She and her mother Margot find themselves in the thick of Maori culture when Rachel represents a film she appeared in at a Maori Film Festival. While on location Rachel meets Samoan filmmaker Nikki who she finds herself surprisingly drawn to.

Back home Rachel is confused by her feelings for Nikki but decides to embrace them with the support of her best friend Sam. However plans go awry at a cafe meeting with Nikki when Samoan actor Frankie Adams who plays herself whisks Nikki away to a community fundraiser event. When Nikki and approaches Rachel later at the fundraiser Rachel becomes embarrassed and leaves.

When her lunch date gets cancelled with Rachel's boss Nikki asks Rachel out to lunch. The pair hit it off and decide to follow up with a movie date. Rachel invites Nikki to her place for dinner and they end up spending an intimate night together.

The relationship then goes along smoothly until it hits a speed bump on account of Rachel's one night stand showing up forcing both women to define what the relationship with each other means to them.

Nikki Si'ulepa who wrote and directed the movie is also an actor in her own right. She played a a leading role as Mel in the acclaimed New Zealand lesbian web series Pot Luck. Her wife, Rachel Aneta Wills, also starred in Pot Luck as Anna and appears in SBD as Janine.

The Same But Different (2019) movie has done the circuit of Gay and Lesbian Film Festivals and received critical acclaim. It has not yet been released mainstream but can be watched exclusively the SBD website.

MIA and DANNI - Love and Other Catastrophes (1996) Australian Film

Mia and Danni - Lesbian Interest Storyline

The Australian lesbian interest movie Love and Other Catastrophes (1996) (IMDb 6.3) features a lesbian storyline between Mia and Danni. This is a low budget indie film that was made when the director Emma-Kate Croghan was still studying film at Melbourne University. While occasionally a little uneven this is a charming little romantic comedy with enough humour to delight most viewers.

The whole story takes place in the course of one day and is set at Melbourne University and later at the housewarming party. The plot of Love and Other Catastrophes revolves around Mia (Frances O'Connor) and her housemate Alice (Alice Garner) who desperately need another housemate for the spare room. Mia's girlfriend Danni (Radha Mitchell) would like to move in but commitment phobic Mia is keeping her at arms length by concealing from her that the room is actually vacant.

Mia is struggling with university administration while Alice is trying hard to avoid her supervisor for fear that her thesis on Doris Day as a Feminist Warrior is not up to scratch. Meanwhile Danni accompanied by Savita (her silent companion long before Silent Bob I might add) is trying to figure out whether Mia still actually cares about her.

Alice who hasn't had a relationship in three years is crushing hard on campus heart-throb Ari, a magnet to women but nevertheless disillusioned with them. Mia introduces Alice to Ari but warns Alice that Ari is not for her and she is better off with a more down-to-earth guy. Alice persists despite Ari not meeting her rather narrow criteria: left-handed, truthful and likes the same movies as her.

Meanwhile Mia who leaves everything to the last minute gets caught out when she tries to change courses. She discovers she has a massive unpaid library fine that must be paid and no amount of pleading or charm is going to budge student administration. Just when Mia has given up hope of finding the money, lovestuck Danni tells her about the cash she has to buy a cello. Mia sweet talks Danni out the money and the next minute Mia is at the desk of student administration getting the paperwork she needs.

But nothing runs smoothly for Mia as her cantankerous professor of film creates a road block to her leaving his department by sending Mia back and forth between departments in a bureaucratic nightmare. Eventually Mia has to enlist Alice and Ari who help her get the signature she needs through clandestine means.

One of the standout features of the movie Love and Other Catastrophes is the original soundtrack. Frances O'Connor as Mia gives a short but memorable rendition of Shivers which is a movie highlight. Equally memorable is the look that Radha Mitchell as Danni gives her when she comes across her chilling out on the grass.

Switch to the housewarming party where Mia and Danni are trying to figure out how to break up civilly even though neither wants to break up. Eventually Danni throws Mia a lifeline and they share some poignant moments discussing their breakup.

Danni to Mia: So it's like that huh?
Mia: Yeah and to top it all off my girlfriend dumped me.
Danni: That's really funny because I heard that you dumped her.
Mia: No she did it to me but I deserved it.
Danni: Have you tried talking to her?
Mia: I was insensitive. I dunno if she would speak to me again.
Danni: Well I'd give a try. You know if you apologized. Grovelled. Sent her flowers. You know that sort of thing.
Mia: I think she's seeing someone else.
Danni: Well I'd give it a try anyway. You never know. Maybe they're just friends.
Mia: So you think this apologizing thing might be worth a go?
Danni: I think the grovelling is very important.
Mia: What about Savita?
Danni: She's gone home.

Having cleared the air our lovers kiss and canoodle and before we know it they are back together. Mia takes a massive leap forward by inviting Danni to move in with her. Danni accepts.

Sunday Morning in Bed after Reconciling as a Couple

Mia and Danni are a cute couple and their own screen chemistry is undeniable. In 1996 the film was groundbreaking in some ways by showing a young lesbian couple who are happy together and their friends totally accepting of their relationship. This is one movie from that era where no one dies, nor is there angst about coming out or second guessing women loving women.

AMMONITE (2020) - Lesbian Interest Film - Mary and Charlotte

Ammonite (2020) is a lesbian interest film (IMDb 6.7) set in Southern England in the 1840's (Lyme Regis) that tells of the love story between Mary Anning and Charlotte Murchison, real life people who lived in the 19th century.  While Mary and Charlotte were known to be friends and had a close relationship, there is however, no evidence that they were lovers in real life.

In Ammonite the plot revolves around Mary (Kate Winslet), a fossil hunter and early paleontologist who ekes out her living selling marine fossils to tourists in order to support herself and her ailing mother Molly (Gemma Jones).

In the end Mary and Charlotte are compelled to determine the true nature of their relationship and as such the film is worth the watch for those interested in lesbian interest movies.

The mood of Ammonite is grounded in stark virtually monochromatic landscapes and stoicism. So much meaning in the film is conveyed in subtext and body language. While Ammonite has many similarities with the film Portrait of a Lady on Fire they are very different movies in tone and treatment. You be the judge which you prefer the most.

Several days later Trish calls into their flat to find Elmira in bed with someone else. Trish handles this scene with dignity leaving with the parting shot that "it's only been three days" and their relationship "must have been really special."

Fast forward a year in the future Elmira is still working as a DJ in the nightclub overseen by the bigoted and unforgiving Johnny. She has a lot of meaningless liaisons with women but nothing can erase the memory of Trish from her mind.

When Elmira and gay pal Matt inadvertently find a stash of cash belonging to Johnny they end up on the run and arrive unannounced at Trish's sheep station in the hope that Trish will put them up. Trish takes them in for a few days but demands after that they move on with their "damn money."

As the days pass Elmira and Trish reconnect and even spend a night together making love. In the morning though their differences reemerge and it looks like the distance between them is too great.

Then Johnny shows up unexpectedly and the group hide out in an old farm building thinking they will be safe from him there. However Johnny tracks them down and he and E have a show down where Elmira holds a gun to his head when he threatens Trish with a knife.

E says "hurt Trish and I'll blow your brains out"

Elmira threatens to kill Johnny if he hurts Trish and Johnny backs down thus providing the opportunity for them to make a run for it. Fortunately Trish has arranged for her friend Bev to fly Elmira and Matt to safety and she shows up just in the knick of time.

E and Trish get their happy ending, "I only want to be with you."

Throughout the film Matt makes reference to Elmira's selfishness. At the end, however, we see her rescue Trish's dog and give the money back to Johnny thus proving that through this experience she has changed. She tells Trish she doesn't want the money after all and all she has ever wanted is to be with her.

All About E has some plot twists that don't stand up to too much scrutiny. The acting is at times forced however Mandahla Rose who plays Elmira is endearing. Julie Billington (Starting from Now) as Trish with her steady pragmatic approach to life provides a rudder for the movie. Matt also gives a winning performance as Elmira's gay friend and confidente even if his Irish accent is not always true.

Matt says "It seems to me you're in with a chance if you don't blow it."

As a lesbian movie All About E is a watchable film with some very relevant lesbian interest themes and a happy ending even if it does get a bit bogged down here and there in the telling. It has some magical moments and strong scenes between Trish and Elmira. The lengthy love scene is particularly well choreographed and not to be missed.

GIRLTRASH: ALL NIGHT LONG (2014) - Lesbian Interest Film (USA)

Girltrash: All Night Long (2014), is a lesbian interest film, (IMDb 6.4) set in LA and concerns two lesbian musicians and longtime friends: Daisy and Tyler whose rock group is competing in a band slam contest.

In this romcom / musical comedy romp the principal couple in the group go from virtual strangers to lovers in one epic night. A series of mishaps over the course of the evening impedes the protagonists progress and forces them to enlist the help of others to reach the venue on time. Along the way their efforts are hampered by a golf-club-wielding ex-con Monique with a score to settle.

Daisy and Tyler encounter the first obstacle early on when Tyler's car breaks down and they have to ask Daisy's younger sister Colby to lend them her car. In exchange for driving them to the concert, Colby, who is just about to graduate from college and gain her freedom, demands that they help her hook up with her girl crush Misty at the Truck Stop Lounge.

Believing that Colby is not really gay but just copying her, Daisy is reluctant to help and instead professes that Misty, an aspiring actress and object of Colby's affection, is out of Colby's league. She tells Tyler that Colby is way too inexperienced to be of interest to Misty and that unless she has "an angle" her sister is likely to get her heart broken. Tyler, who is renowned for her girl conquests agrees to help Colby by inviting Misty and her bisexual friend Sid along but on the strict understanding with Daisy that she is not allowed to seduce Colby.

Tyler Suggests Some Girl Nailing Strategies to Colby

Unbeknownst to Colby, Misty has been crushing on Tyler for some time however Tyler who is mostly interested in weed, playing her guitar and getting laid with a different girl each night does not actually remember meeting Misty before.

Meanwhile Daisy has her own problems when she runs into her ex-girlfriend Xan and her new girlfriend Kelly, also a musician who is set to play in the band slam. Daisy tries to get some closure beyond the tweet that let her know the relationship was over, by demanding that Xan speak with her about their break up. Xan gives her the brush off and when Daisy persists she ends up in a fight with loud-mouth Kelly.

Just as things look like they couldn't get any worse Monique a small time thug recently released from prison impounds the car and the band's gear in exchange for an unpaid debt. Tyler then takes matters into her own hands and takes off in Kelly's car.

The answer to their problems seems to be at hand when the group discovers a stash of illegal drugs in Kelly's car. To convert them into cash they turn up at Colby's sorority sisters night ready to party.

Misty and Colby have a heart-to-heart but Colby's hopes get deflated when she sees Misty making a play for Tyler shortly after. Colby convinces Tyler to have fake sex with her in order to make her seem more worldly and therefore more attractive to Misty. However, the plan backfires when Daisy discovers Tyler in bed with Colby and debars her from the band and her life.

Misty seeing her big chance makes a move on Tyler but Tyler knocks her back. Luckily Colby is at the ready to provide a shoulder to cry on. Misty soon realizes she really is into Colby after all and is perhaps the only genuine person she has met in LA. 

Let's Start Over Colby and Misty

Monique gate crashes the party but the campus police turn up and take Monique into custody. Daisy and Colby's Mom couldn't be more disinterested and drops them off at the car. The group then make their way to the venue without further hiccup. 

At the band slam Kelly's performance shines despite her less than winning personality but Daisy sings her heart out backed by Alotta Lame to take first prize. Just at the crucial moment golf club wielding Monique turns up to claim the prize and Daisy and Tyler hand the winner's cheque over to her.

Alls well that ends well in this movie as Daisy and Tyler renew their friendship and are on a high from their win. Colby and Misty make out backstage and go all the way. Afterwards Misty wishes Colby "a Happy Graduation" and we are pretty sure that "the dream girl" has been got" as Colby wished for near the beginning of the movie.

The Girltrash movie is a prequel to the web series Girltrash! As a film Girl Trash: All Night Long is entertaining to watch with good solid performances from the main cast. It has enough humor and song that you know it is not to be taken too seriously. And best of all we get a happy ending where friends stay friends and more importantly in a lesbian movie girl gets girl.

Tala and Leyla

I Can't Think Straight (2008), is a British lesbian interest film, (IMDb 6.5) about a young London-based Jordanian-Christian woman Tala who although engaged to be married falls for her best friend's girlfriend Leyla. Tala, an heiress and businesswoman in her own right, knows that her preference is for women but to keep her family happy has had several near attempts at walking down the aisle with a man. In the end, and much to her family's frustration, Tala always finds a reason not to commit and pulls the plug at the last minute. She does not tell her family the real reason which of course is that she cannot find what she is looking for in a relationship with a man.

Leyla, on the other hand, has limited dating experience and is a little naive. She is Muslim, lives a sheltered existence at home with her parents, works in her family business and is writing her first novel. She has never had a relationship with a woman but her CD and book collection give some indication of her deeper but as yet unawakened sapphic desires.

The romance for this couple is a slow burn. On meeting they clash over views on religion however by the time they have played tennis the next day it is clear that they are already well on the way to falling in love. They subsequently spend a weekend in Oxford together where they have the opportunity to spend the evening alone and before they know it they are dancing sensually with each other and eventually sleep together.

Leyla: I want to be with someone who, ten years from now, still makes my heart jump when I hear her key in the door. And that someone is you.
Leyla: Have you ever done this before?
Tala: Slept with a woman while my fiance makes wedding plans? Nope, never done that before.

However, once the night is over, reality bites and both lovers come back to earth with a thud as they consider the practicality of being together as a couple. Lesbianism is frowned on in their respective cultures and each woman is already laboring under the pressure of strong family expectations. Tala's mother who in someways embodies the cultural constraints on the couple, ups the ante by encouraging Tala's fiance to fly in for a visit forcing Tala to make a decision about coming out to her parents.

Although not always a satisfying watch I Can't Think Straight is a romantic comedy at heart and delivers with some funny moments. Both lead actresses Lisa Ray as Tala and Sheetal Sheth as Leyla give entertaining and competent performances. It is the second pairing as they also appeared in The World Unseen together. The director of I Can't Think Straight Shamin Sarif adapts her own novel here along with the help of co-writer Kelly Moss to produce a watchable and entertaining film.
