A lesbian storyline is embedded within this highly rated and moving film The Edge of Heaven (On the Other Side). Ayten, a political activist flees from her homeland Turkey to Germany and begins the search for her mother. With no means of support, Ayten enlists the help of a stranger, Lotte, who takes her into her home despite the disapproval of her conservative mother. When Ayten is declined asylum Lotte travels to Turkey to try to free her from prison but with catastrophic results.
The Edge of Heaven was the winner of the Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. This movie is also known under the worldwide title of "On the Other Side" which is a direct translation of the original German title "Auf der anderen Seite.
