Same But Different: A True New Zealand Love Story (2019), (IMDb 7.3) is an independent film of lesbian interest set in Auckland New Zealand. The Same but Different film, a romantic comedy, is the brainchild of Nikki Si'ulepa and is based on her own real life love story with her wife Rachel Aneta Wills.The plot of Same But Different follows Rachel, a single Mum of two and an actor who wants to get out of the city after a drunken one night stand has unsettled her. She and her mother Margot find themselves in the thick of Maori culture when Rachel represents a film she appeared in at a Maori Film Festival. While on location Rachel meets Samoan filmmaker Nikki who she finds herself surprisingly drawn to.
Back home Rachel is confused by her feelings for Nikki but decides to embrace them with the support of her best friend Sam. However plans go awry at a cafe meeting with Nikki when Samoan actor Frankie Adams who plays herself whisks Nikki away to a community fundraiser event. When Nikki and approaches Rachel later at the fundraiser Rachel becomes embarrassed and leaves.

When her lunch date gets cancelled with Rachel's boss Nikki asks Rachel out to lunch. The pair hit it off and decide to follow up with a movie date. Rachel invites Nikki to her place for dinner and they end up spending an intimate night together.
The relationship then goes along smoothly until it hits a speed bump on account of Rachel's one night stand showing up forcing both women to define what the relationship with each other means to them.
Nikki Si'ulepa who wrote and directed the movie is also an actor in her own right. She played a a leading role as Mel in the acclaimed New Zealand lesbian web series Pot Luck. Her wife, Rachel Aneta Wills, also starred in Pot Luck as Anna and appears in SBD as Janine.
The Same But Different (2019) movie has done the circuit of Gay and Lesbian Film Festivals and received critical acclaim. It has not yet been released mainstream but can be watched exclusively the SBD website.
