Reaching for the Moon tells the true story of the passionate romance between the American poet Elizabeth Bishop and her lesbian lover, Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Elizabeth Bishop, who is struggling with writer's block travels from New York to Rio de Janiero to visit her old college friend Mary. There she meets Mary's partner Lota who falls madly in love with the shy, reclusive and socially awkward poet and so begins their tempestuous relationship. Reaching for the Moon is a beautiful tale about a real life affair between two famous women set against the backdrop of political unrest in 1950's Brazil. Be warned the ending is very sad.
Miranda Otto (as Elizabeth Bishop)
Glória Pires (as Lota de Macedo Soares)
