Long-term lesbian couple Jules (Julianne Moore) and Nic (Annette Bening) are raising their two teenage children Joni and Laser who were conceived through artificial insemination. When Joni and Laser seek out their biological father, Paul (Mark Ruffalo) complications arise for the two mothers when the teens bond with Paul and invite him into their lives.
